Heavenly Father, I was talking someone last week about You and trying to explain how Jesus is the only Way we can really relate to You. Trying to understand the infinity of space is well-nigh impossible; if we get to the end of the universe, what is next? It is mind blowing! (To me it is anyway)
Trying to fathom an infinite God is equally impossible. Omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient. Wow! You are all-powerful, all-knowing and all-present, everywhere at all times. How can I really grasp this? How can I relate to this? How can I know You? How can I speak to You? You knew this was so difficult for us, if not impossible, so You came to earth in the only Way we could understand: Jesus
John testifies at the beginning of his Gospel Truth: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth"
Jesus we can grasp; Jesus we can relate to; Jesus we can know; Jesus we can speak to. And through Jesus we can come to You, because He is You. You and He are One and the same. You inspire us to worship You as our Creator God in prayer and in songs: "I’m swept away by the wonder of Your love. How One so great could love this one so small. And when I realize the distance between Your heart and mine, I'm amazed when You call me to Your side"
I come to You through Jesus. Purify my heart. "You are my hiding place. You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance. Whenever I am afraid I will trust in You. Let the weak say I am strong in the strength of the Lord." Thank You that I can know You, my God, my Jesus, my Saviour
Amen

Heavenly Father, I think I may have done You a disservice a couple of days ago when praying "life to the full" was about eternal life after death, and not in this life. I said: "Life to the full, could mean a life brimming over with good things, exciting things and fun things; but it would seem that for many this is not the case; many lives are filled with sadness, misery and heartbreak. And many lives are cut short!"
I actually believe that even though a life may have sadness, misery and heartbreak, it can still be a full life, a fulfilled life. With You, nothing is impossible. With You there are three things that remain: "faith, hope and love." These three are a gift from You, through Jesus and affirmed by the Holy Spirit. These three bring a deep sense of peace, no matter what our circumstances: "The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus"
This is a calm that Your Spirit brings, defying logic, guarding our heart and mind, reducing anxiety, and enabling us to live again. Presenting our requests to You is prayer, which we do in faith. "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you"
Even in difficult times, You care for us. No matter how low we feel You can lift us up. You alone can satisfy the longing in our hearts. "A life brimming over with good things, exciting things and fun things," can be an empty life; even with many good things, we can feel something is missing, a void. Only You can fill that emptiness
Help us, no matter what our circumstances to seek You, because no matter what our circumstances, in You we find fullness of life. Thank You
Amen

Heavenly Father, I want a heart like Jesus. I want a heart like His. I want a heart that is pure. I want a heart that is undivided. I want a heart that has no desire to sin. I want a heart that wants to do Your will, not mine. I believe You want this for me too, but it seems it is not that simple
It seems there is a problem! A very quick reflection, and I know what the problem is: ME. Jesus was prepared to give up Heaven and earth to do Your will. "Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, he made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!"
I'm fairly certain I can't do what He did, and I don't suppose You expect me to either. But You do make this promise: "I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit in you and move you to follow My decrees and be careful to keep My laws"
And You did this for St Paul who wrote: "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." But it seems even Paul struggled: "So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?
Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin." Perhaps the best I can hope for, is a heart like King David; sinful, repentant, and a man after Your own heart?
Amen

Heavenly Father, sometimes people make empty promises, promises to themselves and to other people that they don't keep; in some cases promises they have no intention of keeping. Thank You that You are not like people! Your promises are never empty, in fact they are fully loaded with Your goodness and Your power, and are to Your glory
When a human being makes a promise, and keeps that promise, our natural response is to say, "Thank you." So, it is only natural that when You fulfill Your promises, and there are so many, we say, "Thank You," too. About this time of year the phrase: "A dog is for life, not just Christmas," starts to appear. This is a warning to people who are considering getting a puppy for a present, that it is a great responsibility, going on for the rest of its life
The same is true about Jesus, but instead of being a warning, it is one of Your promises: "Jesus is for Life, not just Christmas." It may be that the promise came to us at the first Christmas, but He came fully loaded. Lord Jesus, You are the "Yes" to every one of God's promises. You said: "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
Life to the full, could mean a life brimming over with good things, exciting things and fun things; but it would seem that for many this is not the case; many lives are filled with sadness, misery and heartbreak. And many lives are cut short! Life to the full? You keep Your promise because what happens in this life is only drop in time; life to the full is eternal life!
You keep Your promise, even if we die, yet shall we live. You said "I am the Resurrection and the Life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in Me will never die. Do you believe this?" I do believe this. Your Resurrection proves You have authority over life and death. My life is in Your hands; it will be a full life, going on into eternity. There are no empty promises with You. Thank You
Amen

Monday 8th December
Heavenly Father, I suppose we all have routines to our day, certain things that we do which we don't really think that much about, they just happen as a regular occurrence. When our world is shaken, then sometimes those routines have to change, certain things will never be the same again. Cooking and shopping for one, instead of two, for example. Having to think about, and do things, which we didn't previously
Yet, for me, in the midst of this turmoil and upheaval, one thing remains constant, my time with You; just as You remain constant in Your love for me. In starting my day with You, my shaky world is restored, the turmoil becomes peaceful, and despite all the upheaval, the ground is solid beneath my feet. Even though the days may seem dark and forbidding, Jesus is still the Light of the world, and the Son is still shining
Each day I can come into Your presence and be encouraged. Each day I can put on Your armour and despite the tears and heartache, I can be strengthened. Your Word tells me: "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power." It is not my strength or power that will get me through the day, it is Yours
The enemy would seek to take advantage of me in my times of sorrow, but I can be equipped. You tell me: "Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes." Thank You for the belt of Truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God
I know You will be with me and that I am ready to face the day and the 'new normal.' There is still so much beauty to be seen and enjoyed
Amen
