Heavenly Father, there is always so much going on in the world it is hard to keep track of what is important. There is so much going on within my own life and the life of my family that it is hard to keep track of what is important. Thank You that I can come before You today bringing everything to You to sort out what is actually important
I ask You, Lord, what is important to You? I believe You answered me immediately, "Love". Love is what is at the heart of what is important. My relationship with You is one of love; Your perfect love for me and my imperfect love for You. Your incredible sacrifice of love on the cross and my inadequate sacrifice in my daily life
Thank You that everything depends on You and not upon me
Thank You that everything depends on Your love and not mine
Thank You that Your love is so great that it covers a multitude of sins. Your Word tells me: "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins". If our love can do this then I can be sure that Your love does so much more. It is said that love is the most powerful force in the world. You tell us: "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer... Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good". At the heart of everything important is love
Lord Jesus, everything You did flowed from love. Your love brought healing and forgiveness, compassion, and wholeness. Your willingness to overlook offences is one of many examples to follow. Even on the cross, as You suffered horribly, You said: "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing"
Help me to find the important things today by measuring them in love; if love does not flow it cannot be that important. Thank You
Amen

Thursday 29th May
Heavenly Father, I heard a line in a film the other day, can't remember what it was, that went something like this: "Those of us who can soar to the highest heights can also plunge to the deepest depths". I don't think this applies to me, at least I think it doesn't
If I could draw a straight line, like a graph, with another line moving either side of it to show the depth of my emotions over time, I don't think it would move very much either side. I don't know if this is a good thing? I rarely whoop and holler in joy, but neither am I in floods of tears in the depths of despair. I can't say that I feel like King David, who wrote: "I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drenched my couch with tears". But then, neither do I dance before the Lord with all my might in my underwear! (Perhaps I should be doing both?)
It's not that I never get upset, and on Saturday I punched the air when my team scored the winning goal, but generally I am pretty much on an even keel. Just occasionally I hear something that moves me to tears, not a single tear trickling down my cheek, but proper tears, weeping. I know that when that happens I need to pray; to come to You in my sorrow and seek Your help
I know that in most cases nature takes its course, and a course of events happens as we would expect. I dropped a bowl the other day and it broke into pieces, as I would expect; but just occasionally the unexpected happens. You are a supernatural God, You rule over the natural world; You created the natural world. Sometimes You intervene and nature does not take its course; You redirect nature and a miracle happens
Father, may You intervene today so that something miraculous happens; may a broken bone be healed, a cancer disappear, a blind person see, someone come to know Jesus
Lord, may I shout for joy and sing Your praises as I hear of the great things You have done. And Lord, may I sing Your praises and shout for joy anyway, despite the circumstances. "See, I AM doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I AM making a Way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland"
Lord Jesus, You are the Way in the wilderness. Draw me close to You today. Thank You
Amen

Wednesday 28th May
Heavenly Father, I haven't had time to get out for a walk for about a month or so, due to circumstances beyond my control. A lot of my praying is done when I walk with You, but recently I have mostly prayed while visiting or more recently while cooking, cleaning, etc. Thank You that You have still been speaking to me, often through materials provided by others
Our church has a 'Verse of the Day' online, and on Monday it read: “And they were deeply offended and refused to believe in Him. Then Jesus told them, 'A prophet is honoured everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family'. And so He did only a few miracles there because of their unbelief” Matthew 13:57-58 NLT
Yesterday my calendar had the following words: "If you wait for affirmation for your work from others, you may very well wait a long time. But your work matters to God. He is proud of you. God's eyes are always filled with delight when He looks down on you. He never ceases to rejoice over you with singing". I am quite sure You planned these two unrelated items to speak to me
Lord Jesus, You faced all sorts of criticism and condemnation when You lived among us. Your disciples often didn't understand You, doubted You, or disappointed You, causing You to cry out when they could not cast out a demon from a boy: "You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me". You rebuked the demon and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment! You relied on Your Father to give You the affirmation You needed, because it did not come from us
After all this I thought, or heard: "Jesus came so God could look at us eye to eye". Help me to keep listening, believing and trusting in You. Guide me today by Your Spirit. And in all I do may I look to You, and You only, for affirmation. Thank You
Amen

Tuesday 27th May
Heavenly Father, thank You that there are times when you provide the perfect song that we need to hear. For me, today is such a day. I know I need Your Word every day, I need Your Spirit every day, I need Your strength every day, I need Your power within me every day, I need my friends and family every day. St Patrick's Breastplate came up as a song today, just what I needed to hear, to be reminded of
Thank You: "Christ be with me and within me, Christ behind me and before, Christ to fight for me and to win me, Christ to comfort and restore. Christ beneath me and above me, Christ in quiet and in danger, Christ in hearts of those who love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger"
Lord Jesus, thank You that today I can trust You with all of this and more! "Christ in every heart that's broken, Christ in every joy and pain, Christ in every word that's spoken, Christ in sun and moon and rain, Christ in resting and in rising, Christ the Lord of all my life, Christ to guide me and to shield me, Christ protecting me in strife"
Lord, I know You have been with me this far. Even when my heart is broken, even when my spirit is broken, You remain strong and steadfast; always with me. "So do not fear, for I AM with you; do not be dismayed, for I AM your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand"
Thank You for Your Word: "My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart You, God, will not despise"
Lord guide me today. As each situation comes up help me to do what needs to be done. "You alone are my strength, my shield, to You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship You". May today be a day of worship, love and sacrifice, empowered by You
Amen

Monday 26th May
Heavenly Father, I was up very late last night, I got up late this morning, had a breakfast to make, and emptied the bin, the recycling and the compost; hence I am a bit late meeting with You this morning
This is quite unusual for me, but it did make me think about those people for whom 'such is life'. I have never been a 'carer' before! I don't mean that I didn't care about anyone, or anything, but I mean I've never had the role of carer. I've sat for many hours at the bedside, holding hands, praying constantly, ready to peel a banana, take the wrapper off a sweet or make a cup of tea; happy to drive to the shop to get cherryade because all of a sudden dandelion and burdock "just won't do anymore”; and ready to toast crumpets in the middle of the night
But then, there was always a professional there, nurses, doctors, and ancillary workers to be called upon if anything happened. This is different. I have had the family here with me to help, for which I am so grateful, and there are trained professional carers coming in four times a day, but soon the family will have to go back to their own homes and families and it will be just me! Or will it?
Thank You Father for the Church! We have so many loving, caring friends at church who have offered help and support, doing the ironing, sitting next to the bed so I can have a break, helping in all kinds of ways. I am truly blessed by Your provision. Thank You
But Lord, I know there are many who are not as fortunate as I am, who are the only carer without the support of family, friends or professional carers. Lord Jesus, bless them today as they look after a loved one 24/7; may they know Your presence, feel Your love around them and strengthen them by Your Spirit as they do Your work. Such is life for some people
Thank You for the hope You have given us that one day You will wipe every tear from our eyes. "There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Thank You for being our everlasting, ever loving carer
Amen
